Hi everyone,

I'm new to the whole greyhound training and would like to hear everyone's thoughts on what exercise methods/feeding they believe is best, i.e. thoughts on walking/galloping etc. I'm not expecting everyone to give away their secrets! But a bit of guidance would be much appreciated.

I have read Training and Racing the greyhound by Darren Morris and I am about to start reading Charlie Lister's book on greyhounds. One thing that seems pretty consistent throughout all training methods is the use of galloping and a gallop track to achieve peak fitness. However, there isn't much to be said about trainers who don't have access to a gallop, how and where would they gallop their dogs? (Also any book suggestions would be much appreciated!)

If there is also any trainers on here in the Hertfordshire area (I'm about 15 miles east of Henlow dog track) that would be willing to 'show me the ropes' and offer me some guidance. That would also be greatly appreciated!

Search ebay or amazon for a second hand copy of

The Guvnor The Greyhound Trainer by H. Monatagu - Harrison

Originally published a very long time ago, but still relevant

Ideal for a newcomer because it covers the sort of question youve specifically asked, plus feeding, rearing, spotting and treating minor ailments and injuries

Good luck

Cheers

Hi Thomas, A great book to get hold of, especially for a newcomer is "The Ultimate Greyhound" written by Mark Sullivan.

You can still purchase this book though Amazon, Google books etc.
You'll love it!

Read that post this morning. Very informative and reassuring to know that I'm sort of on the right lines on how you'd train a dog well.
