Steve.......I have previously worked on a turf farm.....growing.....cutting.....fertilizing......and laying turf.

Your second question.......I can answer that one for you.

After putting fertilizer down....then laying turf.......you water it and roll it.
YOU DO NOT TOP DRESS IT IMMEDIATELY.
The reason being it will die.
The new grass has to root and bed in before top dressing can occur.

Every lawn that I have laid DOES NOT get top dressed for 12 months........if at all.

I went up and inspected the track after 2 weeks. I thought they had done a top job.......and the greenkeeper from the local Golf Course was looking after it. It was looking good.......and I have photos.

With that being said Rick, replacing grass during the coldest time of the year, which is also the dryest 1/4 of the year, is not economical.

Until the grass has fully reshooted, Bundy will remain stagnant as owners & trainers become more frustrated.
The track works should have been done during the warmer months, some 2 months after it was dug up & participants should have been notified in advance so they could have made possible changes to their kennels.

I know of a NEWBIE trainer that has a team of greyhounds some 4 to 5 hours away, who was planning on an assault on the THEN up & coming YOUNG GUN series. He was bouncing off me for advice & he decided to drive down & bring them up 2 weeks prior to the heats, so they could trial on the track. Sensible decision....but what a waste of time & energy that turned out to be as the track was closed that weekend.

Anyway....As Kev has stated. It's now 10 years since Parklands was stolen from the industry.

Kev,

Without denying RQ's responsibilities, the prime issue with tracks is surely a function of government and finance. Its inability to sort out Albion, replace Parklands and the decision to pull out of Logan were politically inspired.

Clearly, greyhound politics would be better served with a dedicated greyhound board, although history shows that did not work well either.

Better again would be a corporatised and commercially-based management structure with minimal involvement from government.

Finally a welcome catch up with the rest of Australia...INJURY REBATE in QLD!...except it's flawed.

EXTERNAL LINK
This is basically in line with most other states.

There is a basic flaw with all of it and it needs to be said.
Greyhound people are generally NOT FLUSH WITH CASH!
This will not help save Greyhounds when the owner cannot afford to outlay $1,600 of a $2,000 Vet bill!
They will make the decision to put the dog to sleep IF THEY HAVEN"T GOT THE MONEY!!!
Some have limited reserves and if the bill is say $4,000, although they desperately want to save the dog, cannot afford the substantial initial outlay.

RQ propose to pay up to 80% for eligible injuries AFTER the surgery is paid for by the owner.
Why not pay the Vet DIRECT after the surgery?!?!?!?
Surely it's not too hard to liaise with the Vet and pay them DIRECTLY.
Create a RQ recommended circle of VETS, negotiate a reasonable charge rate...WIN - WIN?

IMO, it's not going to stop the flow but marginally slow it.
This is not what is needed.
People want to save their dogs, RQ have nothing to lose by paying the Vet direct, and give the owners the chance to save MOST of the dogs.

Low grade, low earner dogs get injured the same as higher earners!
Hobby trained dogs get injured the same as professionally trained and owned dogs!

Change the way it is rebated and it's a winner.
The cost to RQ is no different and the results are magnified.

It's only commonsense.

In your submissions,ASK the commission to notify you of the breeding, rearing, breakers and pretraining categories in the harness and thoroughbred codes or is the commission and treasury only discriminating against the greyhound code?

Peter Gleeson, The Courier-Mail
October 29, 2018 1:00am

THIS is a story about a battler who took on The Establishment and won.

When the live-baiting scandal rocked the greyhound industry in February, 2015, Greg Paull was a greyhound owner, trainer and breeder who had tasted success.

Together with his partner Kirsty they had bred and reared Group dogs, city winners and a track record holder. He loved his greyhounds and the couples lives and friendships revolved around them.

That was until he was charged by Racing Queensland with live baiting, an offence that was subsequently overturned by the courts in July.

They took away my passion, the way I make a living, my job, my life Mr Paull said.
What they didnt factor in was Mr Paulls fierce determination, developed since his days representing his country in the military.

So, when he was banned for life for his alleged involvement in live baiting, he was hellbent on clearing his name.

In evidence presented to the Queensland Racing Disciplinary Board, Mr Paull admitted that he had attended Tom Nobles Churchable property with the intent of trialling one or more greyhounds, accepting that at no point did he have any idea that the establishment was unregistered with Racing Queensland.
On the day of the alleged offence, August 20, 2014, Mr Paull said hed had no intention of being involved in live baiting. He said he trialled his dogs and then left the track. He accepted that the video presented as evidence by Racing Queensland showed a small animal as part of the makeup of the lure.

The Racing Disciplinary Board rejected the evidence provided by Mr Paull that the animal was in fact a carcass and sided with Racing Queensland, saying the animal was very much alive.

Mr Paull told the board of the shame that he felt being tainted with the suspicion of being a live baiter, saying that it had brought him and his family significant heartache.

Years on, at the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT), that decision would be overturned. The Disciplinary Board reduced Mr Paulls disqualification from life to 10 years, saying the original penalty was too harsh.
Failing to clear his name, he remained angry and disappointed.

It feels like theyve made (several of) us scapegoats in this whole affair, Mr Paull said. It seems like the Queensland Racing Control Board felt the need to justify their own existence.

Mr Paull was not content with the sentence reduction. Like a number of other trainers disqualified for life for their alleged offences, he sought judicial redress at QCAT.

Mr Paull argued that videotape evidence relied on by Racing Queensland, was illegally obtained by Animals Liberation Queensland and in turn then used illegally by the ABC in producing their Four Corners program that triggered the live-baiting scandal. He hired lawyers.

I wanted to prove it myself but everyone else told me it was too important to mess it up and to get a professional, he said.
That didnt end well, with QCAT dismissing the argument that members of ALQ trespassed on private property while obtaining video footage, ruling that no one was in violation of the Qld Invasion of Privacy Act 1971.

I always thought that breaking the law meant that you had done something illegal, (but) not so in this case because it seems that if you are an animal activist or work for the ABC youre above the law, he said.

By this time, Mr Paull had had enough. In scenes reminiscent of the popular movie The Castle, where the battling Kerrigan family goes to the High Court to stop their home being resumed, he too decided to take on the authorities. Thus began the arduous task of endless days and nights learning the law.

People said I was crazy to fight the law without legal representation and I probably was, but I knew no one would fight as hard for me as I would for myself he said.

He appealed the QCAT Interlocutory decision which was heard by Justice Tim Carmody. He was up against the might of the handsomely resourced states Queensland Racing Integrity Commission which hired top law firm Clayton Utz as well as a QC.
Against the odds, Mr Paull won.

In his ruling Justice Carmody said: In my opinion, the contrary inference is not reasonably open. Racing Queensland is unable to establish as a fact that the (audio) tapes do not record a private conversation. It follows that the review tribunal misapplied the law to the facts by not finding that Racing Queensland had failed to meet the mandatory admissibility threshold of satisfactorily demonstrating that the tapes do not record a private conversation, and the use of a listening device to record the private conversation.

While it had taken two years at QCAT to achieve this result, his name had still not been cleared. In February this year, Mr Paull went back to QCAT to have the Queensland Racing Disciplinary Board decision set aside. He went armed with the appeal result from Justice Carmody, documentation and a DVD from a Brisbane video expert. They argued that there was no verification of video authenticity.
This resulted in Member Ann Fitzpatrick, in July, ruling that the decision of the Racing Disciplinary Board and the penalty be set aside, and that breaches of the greyhound rules were not established. This meant Mr Paull was free to go back to training greyhounds and attending race meetings.

He had done the impossible and won.

In her decision, Member Fitzpatrick said she was unable to find that at least one of his greyhounds trained with a live animal on the lure arm.

She went on to say that it was fundamental to the respondents allegations against Mr Paull that the small animal is proved to be alive when Mr Paull was trialling his dogs.
I do not think one second of apparent movement on a moving lure is sufficient proof that the animal was alive, she said.

In the end, I cannot find with the requisite degree of certainty that the animal was alive at the point in time marked by QRIC on the video evidence.

In the hearing, Mr Paull said his own observation was that the animal looked like a carcass. I accept that evidence Member Fitzpatrick said.

Reflecting on the years its taken to achieve that decision, Mr Paull said: Its been a living hell.

Our involvement in the greyhound industry is all gone. Our breeding stock that took years to acquire and refine has been dispersed. Ive lost friends, in and out of the racing industry, Ive lost my reputation for honesty and integrity, my career and livelihood were ruined. I feel bitter and angry, and for what? All because the governing body of the greyhound industry couldnt do their job properly.

Weve had to endure a fair bit of flak from all this over the last few years. Once, we were even harassed by the police who turned up in the middle of the night and questioned us on our involvement in the greyhounds. That was weird.

Its taken a lot out of me. I feel drained. Its got to the point where I very rarely leave the house now and if I do, my stomach churns and gets tied up in knots. I could just imagine what Id be like going to the races again. I suppose its just the stress and anxiety of it all.

The judicial redress at QCAT wasnt just about getting back into the dogs but about clearing my name so I can hold my head up high again.

Would he ever get involved in the greyhound industry again?

You can never say never. It gets in your blood, you know, the thrill of racing. It never leaves you, so I suppose, maybe one day.

Firstly, if the industry as a whole conducted themselves with the same vigor, determination, and persistence that Greg Paull showed, we'd all be in a far better position.
Well done, Greg, you not only stuck to your guns but pushed on when many would have capitulated.

Secondly, thanks to Peter Gleeson who continually stands up for the sport and dares publish what some journalists refuse to because it's not "sensational" enough.

Peter is a writer who has the industry at heart and prefers to write about the positives, not the self indulged, sensationalized negatives.

Well done to both.

PERSONAL, I can't believe WE the GREYHOUND industry have been waiting 10 F$%KING YEARS for compensation from the stolen Parklands track...... WTF???

This is BULL$H1T.

(Just a copy below in case it goes missing).

Treasurer
The Honourable Andrew Fraser
Wednesday, July 16, 2008
$10 million compensation for Greyhounds.

The Bligh government has set aside $10 million to assist Greyhounds Queensland Limited move out of the soon to be redeveloped Gold Coast Parklands site.

Treasurer and Racing Minister Andrew Fraser said the public land, which had been leased by several organisations including the Gold Coast Greyhound Racing Club for several years, was now required for the much-needed Gold Coast University Hospital.

The Gold Coast Parklands have always been managed by Parklands Gold Coast Trust and owned by the taxpayer. However for many years different types of organisations on different tenures have operated out of this site.

It is essential we utilise this land to improve and expand health services for the growing Gold Coast community.

Today I can confirm that we will provide $10 million to assist Greyhounds Queensland Limited move from its Gold Coast home.

The Greyhounds presently pay $130,000 a year in a leasehold arrangement. The compensation offered recognises the need to assist the industry and represents a generous settlement.

The Parklands Gold Coast complex comprises 38 hectares and is valued at $25 million. The portion of land that is being taken for the construction of the Gold Coast University Hospital comprises 24% of the site and is worth $6 million.

Mr Fraser said he had met with the Greyhounds Queensland Limited last Friday, July 11, to discuss the compensation and possible alternative sites.

There has been debate for some time over the future facilities for greyhound racing in the region.

I know trainers and breeders have been debating the industrys future in south east Queensland and this announcement will help industry move forward, he said.

Mr Fraser said the focus now needed to be on the long term future of the industry.

The compensation payment will be conditional on the industry applying the funds to new facilities. Where they might be and in what form is a matter for them.

This funding provides the means for the industry to marshal its resources and plan for the long term future. Industry leaders need to put forward the best plan for the industry as a whole.

Mr Fraser said the Bligh government had no policy objection to the possibility of Greyhounds Queensland Ltd exiting their part ownership of Albion Park in Brisbane and seeking to combine the industrys resources at a new site.

If they wish to, we would be happy to help them enter into a proposal with their co-tenants Queensland Harness Ltd to exit Albion Park, he said.

While Logan has been mooted a possible alternative site for a super track, this is something for the industry to decide.

The Bligh government identified the northern site of Parklands Drive, Parkwood as the preferred location for the Gold Coast University Hospital. This land includes state owned land which is occupied by the Parklands Gold Coast Trust.

Is it because Racing Queensland (amalgamation)was set up by the Labour government in 2008 to continue subsidization of the equine codes post Product Co in 2014 ?possibly YES,it has been so successful that NOW after 10 years of greyhound welfare deterioration and continued pilfering of our market share ,Brendan Parnell like ALL his predecessors and aided by government appointed greyhound reps. on the Racing Qld Board is continuing to ignore greyhound welfare and build the one turn track with the$10,000,000 promised by the Labour Treasury in 2008,the Integrity Commission are derelict in their duty of greyhound care concerning the lack of a one turn track.they are only concerned about introducing higher fees and more restrictions on breeders and trainers that hamstring the code.

Hi Patrick,
I take it you see some contradiction?

I am continuing to breed, I intend to breed a few more than I have in the past and I'm hoping that pays off.
There are only two options for me = 1. Breed and stay in and hope like hell things improve or at least survive. 2. Stop breeding and get out!
You see, Patrick, I, like most, don't have my phone ringing out of its cover with people begging me to take their super fast dogs, so what I breed basically gives me the only opportunity to keep going.

My comment of "a mm" I reckon is a fair assessment of where it is atm.
It would take an idiot to say it is all rosey and bright as a button.
Where there is a mm, there is hope.
Were there not a mm, we'd all be GONE!

Some have had enough, some for reasons of their own can't go on, some are waiting in the wings, and some, Patrick, dare to have a go and hope for the best.
You pick which one you want.
I've picked the last one...time will tell if I'm a lunatic or not.

Where do you think we are in the scheme of things and what are your plans from a breeding perspective?

P.S. Aside from all of the above, for the first time ever I have 3 bitches whom I have a huge opinion of and confident they will produce the goods...so I'm bloody well GOING FOR IT, Patrick!

Michael. I totally agree with your thoughts.
I have only been in the industry for 5 years indirectly through syndicates & 1 year as a owner & trainer. I have just whelped our first litter. The first of many I hope.

While everyone will have their own reasons on decisions that have or will be made, I am going to remain positive. I have put all my eggs in the one basket & will give this the best shot that I can.

At this stage in my life, money isn't the be all of everything. Dreams are what drives my motivations now. I prefer to live life being optimistic knowing full well that there are no guarantees. This will also motivate me to be successful.

To be able to breed pups and get the love & satisfaction from them each & every day is enough for me. To watch them grow & know that I am part of their development is my focus.

Hopefully success with follow once they hit the race track. Being relatively new to the industry, I may not carry any scars from previous years but I can only confront what's ahead of me.

I have invested quite heavily into this industry setting up my property & will give it my best shot.

Time will tell

Good on you, Darren.

I hope there are enough people who have hope and dreams to carry us forward.
No doubting the turmoils of the last few years have got to some and there is probably going to be a few more.
Having said that, you either lie down and die or get up and have a go, if you can.

Hope your litter turns out to be a ripper!
