Make that 6 months and still waiting Terry. After asking Brian Kutner several times for an update as promised, 2 months ago I asked Steve Hawkins if he could give us an update, still waiting for a reply from either.

Brian K, just a couple of questions in regards to the newsletter. Regarding the gas outlets it states that the Logan City Council currently budgets $40,000 per annum for the maintenance of these towers. Can you tell us how much the LCC actually spends on maintenence per annum? Budgeting and spending do not always equate. Also has there been a gas management study done on the site since May, 2000 which indicated the gas outlets would need to remain in place until 2017 when they could be removed completely?

It is also stated that your committee met with the Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer and Member for Mt Ommaney, Julie Attwood, I feel it is that particular meeting that would give us more of an idea where we are heading rather than meetings with Opposition Ministers. Therefore would you post the formal response from that meeting?

Hi Steve

It's almost 4 months now since I posted the above two questions and still no answer from Brian, perhaps you could answer them?

Should we all be getting behind the push for the Gold Coasts proposal instead of Logan? What if they can both get a go-ahead, no need for Albion Park. Flog it off & give the industry a cash injection as it is deperately needed.

What seems the best option? I suppose who ever can get it done the sooner would be the best option for all.

In the meantime for the next 2-3 years where is the TAB racing headed. Same two tracks until a new one comes along or does TAB go country? We will soon see if there is an interest when the two selected country clubs have a go.

The Gold Coast Club do not have money for the purchase of land. They are looking at seeking approval from the Gold Coast Council to construct a track at the Carrara complex. The industry will not own the complex it will be back in the old trap of paying rent. If the council decides at some later stage they want the land for something else....out we go again.

Shouldn't we be looking at what is the best for the industry....owning a stand alone complex or renting along with other tenants?

If the Gold Coast want to pay rent that is entirely up to them. If they wish to build a complex at Carrara and stand alone, that is entirely up to them also. They may not have money for the purchase of land, but a similar scenario as with Logan may be on the cards. Oh, the government have allocated 10 mil to go toward the construction of a new track to replace Parklands.

You can bet your balls, GQL will push the Brisbane club to sell its land, as their account slowly withers away. Prize money reductions will be next. They cannot axe any feature events as the state has bugger all in that department already.
The future is to expand and to grow with the communities. All the current crew want is a nice little package in their own backyard. Mackay and Cairns will be lost soon and less to worry about.
This joint venture at Logan will be the downfall of greyhound racing in this state.

Thats how you have to look at it Terry, cover all corridors. But some wont be here in 99 years, 10 years even. So its look after themselves now, the industry , maybe later.

My opinion is that the watchdog committee should join up with the QGOTA.
The QGOTA with the Gold coast Committee and the Watchdog Committee should all put there heads together and make it happen. If everyone gets together in one committee and sorts out the pros and cons of all options, and find the best long and short term Solution. Looking at Victorian greyhound racing which looks like the strongest state in Australia, they have 10 TAB tracks within 200klm radius of Melbourne with another 4 Tab tracks outside the 200klm radius. Based on the population, Qld should have 4-5 Tab Tracks in South-East Queensland and 1 Tab track up North. At the moment we have just 2 Tab tracks. JUST 2 ,Another Track is required ASAP. My opinion is to have a track on the northside(Caboolture), southside(Logan City) and Westside(Ipswich), Gold Coast and Central Brisbane( Albion Park) for SE QLD and 1 Tab track up north like Rockhampton.
Losing Parklands, Beenleigh, Toowoomba and Lawnton has taken it toll and new tracks are required! I know that a suggestion like this takes a lot of time and money and effort but if everyone joins the ONE Committee and works together for the common long term Goal, I am sure results will show.

Your'e on the right track Con. Why they formed a committee which have little or no authority is a bit of a joke really, another ploy. But then those on the current QGBOTA (prior to the influx of new members) do nothing but complain of box draws and such, so another laughing matter. However, the authority shouldve come along and said, look guys we are in a bit of a situation. If GQL had stood firm and supportive behind the QGBOTA, and asked for any recomendations for the state, then maybe they might hold a bit of credibility amongst its members. The way i see it is this Watchdog committee would be opperating illegally. Any club/s can form sub-committee's, though those on such committee's must me financial members of that organisation. The only members (GQL) i am aware of are the current board and representatives from different regions in the state.
The Brisbane club should also have a high membership attendance to work in with those that want the best for this industry. Track closures, trainers etc moving from this state, what does that tell everyone. The members of this industry should be the ones who run it, overseen of course by a governing body in accordance with government regulations.
The aim should be to have the Gold Coast club back racing on their track as soon as possible, then to look at the future and securing that of the Brisbane club and Ipswich. We need to attract people into this industry, not drive them away.

Does anyone know why Beenleigh, Toowoomba and Lawnton closed down?
Parkland closed obviously because of the plans for the new gold coast hospital. What happened to the other 3?

Conrad...In all cases they were Tenants and were deemed not viable by the Authorities.

Surely history should have taught greyhound participants by now that to be a tenant means paying rent to someone else, it also means (as we have found out to our sorrow) that we can be Kicked out at any time.

To pursue any other course other than to own our own complex is to
me the ultimate heresy.

Without doubt the most successful Club in Australia by far is Sandown owned by themselves for over 40 years.

Happy Days

In those cases Pat yes. Yet how many sporting clubs pay rent, bloody heaps and have been doing so for a lot longer then Sandown. It dont matter whether the land is leased through the lands dept or private, you need the right people to handle these arrangements. Qld dont have those types of person and certainly not the right persons to take the industry here into the future.
The best thing for all to do is join the QGBOTA, find out just what each club wants and move from there. It should be about what the clubs want for their members and patrons, and where they want to sit in the future. Each Executive committee from the 4 clubs surrounding Brisbane should be involved with the recognised QGBOTA to map out the future as they see it.

October last year this WDC approached GQL re a survey yet near 6 months on, and have they asked for the industries input, lol. There has only been three polls conducted on GQl website, the FOL, Qld Futurity and a new logo for GQL (Idi Amin would suit)
Prior to October
The WDC have had approximately 5 meetings and in that time they have met with the Directors of Greyhounds Queensland as well as a representative of the Opposition Leader Mr Springborg (Diane Balke), The Shadow Minister for Racing Mike Horan, the State Member for Lockyer Ian Ricketts, the head of the Racing Department Michael Kelly and the Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer and Member for Mt Ommaney, Julie Attwood
I wonder if those mentioned realised they were meeting with a non registered or recognised group. Its no wonder nothing has come out of it.
BK, you said in your very first post.
The time has come QLD stakeholders lets use this site to voice our opinions and get our industry moving again!!!

Take your team to QGBOTA, invite club officials and then things may start to happen.

The problem is Dan, most sporting clubs and organisations have 'public' support, the blessing of the local council and community and are further encouraged by higher governments...unfortunately, greyhound racing commands none of the afforementioned support, the only animal racing avenue that does get support, is the thoroughbreds.

That's why, renting is not an option for us (history proves that)...to guarantee survival and longevity, ownership is a must!!

Ray, maybe its time they had a think about creating another position, namely "publicity officer" to do just that. Get amongst the communities, councils and local government. You wont get their support unless you get out there, something most sporting clubs and organisations do.
