Hi Paul,
i just picked up 2 last week from there & John said they broke in good & they broke in 17.10 He said the track is slow there at the moment.

Hi Paul,
1 thing i dont do is say a dog is City Class, the time is what it is. If the dog can run 500 metres then it "might" be able to win in the city. I am just in the process of sending another dog to New Zealand, he broke in 16.89 (the track slow), he "should" have been a city class dog off that time BUT it looks like 350-400 metres is as far as he will go.

My trainer uses Martins, and he does a good job there,great for box work as well,but if you want a good time guide ,take the dogs to Lismore, over the 300, nice easy bend, track in very good order. A handy type needs to break 16.00, after 2 runs, anything under 15.70 early on, you will be TAB & better.

Had a dog broke in 17.07 at Martins at Yorklea a few years back (went home after 2 weeks only due to not eating). After a break, a few call ups and a couple of short slips, 3 months later trialled there 16.90, the next week in his first run at Lismore ran 15.79, second run 15.62.
As a race dog he got that time down to 15.22. Ended up winning city class Albion Park in 30.36.

Times at johns meens zero..track varies 5tenths from day 2 day.. Its only good 4 teaching dogs 2 break in..if u get under 17 u might have handy dog.. Now i just broke a dog in there that had 3handslips 400m.. 1 run 400m. Then went lismore 3 times with runs ov 25.13-25.11-24.92 4 a 16mth pup.. Then stepped him up 2 520m tha wk after 2 run 30.93 1st 520 and only 5th run from boxes.. He.needs.600m He is a Clappin thunder X Legal air.. Anyway lismore 420m will tell u what type ov dog u got. Just picked up 4 from break in at John Martins today .What a relief, all boxed well, all chased hard, and all hung on at the end.The biggest relief was that they all came home in good condition and more importantly were happy within themselves and came home with similar temperaments as to when they went away.Great to have dogs broken-in..not broken.Recommend to everyone.JQ

John is fantastic, he was great with my rather spoilt GWT litter to the point where he had to fry chicken for Jett to get her to eat. She looked awesome when I picked her up btw and they were definately not mistreated when they were there they were all over John like a rash. Just spoke to him last night and booked in the STP litter for early September, he won't have the same trouble with these buggers they will eat the place down. Good luck getting especially the black dog off the arm though LOL

Have had quite a few their in last 6mths, track varies quite abit, anything under 17 would be considered ok, but IMO times havent given me a guide on track ability/times just yet
If you want good box dogs, john is the man

Thanks for those replies, fellas.
I'd always been led to believe on a 'normal' track surface there you'd generally want a sub 17.3, with at or under 17 deemed very good for 'raw' breakins. Sounds like that's still about the case.
And you're right, it's more about what they do and how they (hopefully) improve from there after a freshen up.

I have had 8 breakins since jan 13, 7 have broken 17sec comfortable
These are raw breakins from the paddock, couple of weeks kenneling etc no trialling or work beforehand
have only had a 2 to races so far and picked up 3 tabs wins
Do you have questions about greyhound racing?
