Any thoughts on Vic based breakers. I know everyone seems to have a favorite, the care factor for the dog is probably a major factor as well of course getting broken properly. Or just as easy to spend the time and do breaking yourself? Cheers, Rich.

Richard,

Without a doubt the best breaker is yourself, thats if you have the time to do it slowly at the dogs pace and not rush it through

Ive seen too many dogs come back from breakers that just shouldnt of been put around with the injuries they have with a report that the dog needs to improve panels to make it... Most of the time you dont have a clue if the dog has any ability what so ever and by the time you fix the dog up your none the wiser

Breaking it yourself means you can do it at the dogs pace, there is no rush to get it done before next months batch arrives. You can get it checked after each run, you can feed it how you would feed a race dog and you can spend the time correcting certain things that need to be fixed. 8 week is the time frame id aim for

Breaking your own dog also gives you a better reflection of the dogs ability then a breakers report imo. You dont race a dog that is sore, so why on earth would you educate a pup that is sore? Im of the opinion that 4 weeks is not enough to break in a dog correctly

I no people dont really care what time a dog breaks in long as its doing everything right, but doing it yourself with a sound dog over those extra few weeks will tell you alot more about the dog ability thats for sure

Nick. Everything you stated was what I had a gut feeling for. I have reared these pups for so long and invested so much. I DO have the time to do it on my own but am a little apprehensive as per the information you see on breakers times..., "my dog broke at this time or that time" So many people seem fixated on break in times? and Im not sure why. These times don't reflect what happens on a race track with a full field. On top of that is the thousands spent to get a pup to that stage to rely on someone's opinion or a stopwatch?

Michael, If I read your post correctly, you are saying dogs are for sale that have a so & so break in time? (correct me if i"m wrong please) why would anyone advertise a dog for sale that has "broken in" with a good time on a particular track? Wouldn't that be a dog you would keep?

So has anyone got thoughts on any 'ok' breakers in Victoria? I cant break in my own pups - I rely on you guys in the industry to do that and pay accordingly.

I'd really appreciate some names of people who are good - feel free not to advise bad ones if you feel it places you in a bad position to name them.

Cheers

For what it is worth, Jenny and Len Cotterill have been doing my pups over the last eight months or so. They have probaly done twenty plus for me now and I really couldn't ask for anything more - ALL are chasing and have come back in excellent condition, bright and happy.
The ones that have had spells and are now in pre training are all going well.

So we talk about litters doing well, and sires representation in races and so on.

Well worth noting Grant Fullerton, a breaker I hold in the highest regard, broke in HOOKED ON SCOTCH, FLYNN, GET IT GYZMO and WHISKEY RIOT.

Great endorsement.

Word on the street is a few SYDNEY trainers now sending their much loved down the highway. Only Rumours of course. Best thing is based on experience you get a fair guide. Thats all we can ask.
