I got an email today from a guy who adopted my ex racer DISAACI.
I loved that dog so much and it was extremely difficult letting him go to GAP as I'd never sent a dog to GAP before.
Anyway, he sent me photos of Eddie at the beach, at the coffee shop, on the esplanade and cuddled up to a fluffy dog. He looked great and he looked so happy. It really made my day.
So I just wanted to say thank you to the adopter and thanks also to GAP.

A message and a photo really helps. Some are so hard to let go,but you know its the right thing for the dog.
Getting that call or photo is so rewarding.
I just wish more adopters would realise how hard it can be and just send a quick message to there previous owner/trainer.

It's great if you can achieve that set-up Jamie.

I'm sure alot of adoptees think we are heartless, giving away these beautiful babies....but in most cases, we have no choice, mainly due to council restriction.

I've ticked that box (Contact Owner - add email address) on 3 occasions.

I've only had 1 that has made contact with me.

That person I've now "Liked"...on FACEBOOK & I can see him (Prince) whenever I like. And he DOES live like a Prince & I'm so thankful. He has more holidays then I do Sundays.

It's got to the stage that whenever these people are holidaying past home, they stop in for lunch along with Prince & Molly his mate.

It's the PINNACLE I think & can only wish that EVERY adoptee, adopted this attitude.

They never forget home & it's great meeting people that love what we love, but can't keep.....all of them :-(

julie

go on "friends of GAP' facebook page

a lot of adopters havent been given contact details of previous owners/trainers and some trainers havent ticked the "wanted to be contacted" box whether by accident or not

and because they are novices they dont know how to look up their dogs career

we have put dogs through gap VIC since we got into greyhounds , we have never had an occasion when we have not heard from the people whom have adopted them , there has always been contact with photos etc

just today maureen has gone to sunbury and she will catch up with two different people who have adopted our dogs ,

we put another one in gap just yesterday and hope he finds a nice home next week when gap vic have a three day event at seymour

we have also put dogs through gap where we have found the new owners for them,, but went through there so they get the green collar and are properly vet checked , desexed etc

i will also say at different times i have been to seymour with our dogs , i have seen some disgraceful presented dogs , surely people can do better , is it to hard to have the dog washed , brushed, cleaned , looking its best ?????????????

Greyhound Adoption Program VIC

WOW is all we can say - our adoption event has been a MASSIVE success with 111 out of 115 greyhounds finding absolutely fantastic forever homes over the last two days! We are both overwhelmed and overjoyed. But we are a tiny bit sad too as our favourite oldies are still here and looking for love - poor old Tommy and Zeta 😥. The other two remaining dogs are Stryx and Quik. Please help us find special homes for these guys by sharing this post far and wide

a letter from a lady who adopted one or our bitches ,

Hi Maureen,
Thought you might like to know that one of our greyhounds was your girl Rosy (now Luna). We adopted her and her foster mate, Bluey (now Ollie), from GAP last July and she will turn 3 in August. Six months on and we cannot imagine life without them. Luna is an absolute gem. Loves a walk, loves being in the car, lives for pats and loves her food - especially cheese! She may never have raced, but she is a world champion digger!
Thank you for giving us our beautiful girl! 😊💕(Photos and video to follow).

Warmest Regards,

Cathy

I'm sorry to raise this older thread but I am an adopter, active with a re-homing group, and am happy to discover owners want to hear from us. I only recently got verified here so that I could post about my hound's retirement.

Please don't misunderstand me, I've never thought owners give up dogs without thinking twice about it. I mostly assumed, at least in the US where I am, that most owners avoided the spotlight to avoid heat from haters (I don't know how hostile things are elsewhere). That makes it really, really tough to contact them and give updates.

I've been a member here for a long time but only recently discovered the Dog Website feature that's been implemented which allows posting of comments, photos and retirement info about particular dogs. If you're not familiar, I just posted retirement comments about my adoptee here:

I've never been able to track down any contact info for his owner so I'm hoping this system can serve as a sort of "safe" drop to share info and he might see it. I'm thrilled the Greyhound-Data team has implemented it. I'm going to encourage other adopters--those not hostile toward racing anyhow--to do the same. I sure hope all owners who desire to more easily keep track of their retirees are able to do so.

There are all sorts of people discovering the wonder of greyhounds

My daughters friend comes over to visit our retired greys, she has developed a great connection to them and the breed, now she is getting one of her own, after a decade of owning little toy dogs

Education is the key

True Sandro.
We recently let go of our last greyhound TAHLO (sister of Disaaci) to the same adopter. So now the littermates are living together in retirement, as they did when they were racing. It's the perfect result for us.
When we meet the adopters at Ballarat for the GAP test, the kennel block was open so I took them through and explained the kenneling process. They just didn't know about weighing in or vet checking. They also got to see how excited Tahlo was being near a track, despite tearing a monkey there at her first start, then coming 15l last at her other run.....
The adopters are part of a greyhound walking group in Melbourne (majority antis) so I hope they spread the news that the dogs are actually very well treated and they love to race.
Education starts with us.

This is why Tony and the Team has been working hard trying to find every Greyhound born ...
It will be interesting to see the pups born each year compared how many get adopted and or are keeped by there OTB .....

Jeff i hope all Groups update there dogs information ..Anti or Pro ..we must find our lost Greyhounds.

I recently sent a 7yo bitch to GAP that had lived with us for two stints of around 8 weeks. It was the hardest thing we have every done as she was part of the family (she also produced my best ever dog) but unfortunately we are not allowed more than 2 dogs in the house.

Adding the information and pictures wasn't too bad. I'll say that it's not exactly a full-featured bulletin-board system, but it's perfectly adequate. I fumbled my way through it which means most can figure it out. I did accidentally upload the same picture twice, so there's that.

I can only speak for the US but re-homing groups here also coordinate adoption information among each other quite poorly, if at all. It sure would help if there was centralized reporting. It's not for lack of desire, it's a resource issue.

If any owners would like to know what the experience is like for a dog being re-homed through the group I volunteer with I'd be happy to share that. It could be long so maybe as a separate post?
