Since the time I have been back, I've roamed and travelled far
From the coolness of Tasmania, to the hazy heat of Marble Bar
Two years ago today it was, I had received life's little scar
In a distant foreign country, where heads stare back in jars

I struggle with the many demons, whenever I try to sleep at night
The constant flashes of a memory, clouded by those distant sights
I know I'm not alone in this, who fight the constant bloody fight
The legacy of a soldiers silent guilt, is it so wrong or so right

The transition back into civvy life, the bane of all whove fought
Just another social mountain to climb, of which you were not taught
Try to discuss the situation, then different talk becomes so fraught
You suddenly realize your just a number. and really count for nought

Try and explain away your actions, to different problems that arise
And slowly watch the home relationship, crumble with much surprise
The one who always thought things out, now brings tears to her eyes
Where now, the slightest indiscretion, brings fights and compromise

You try to clear those memories, that are locked deep within your head
To someone who dearly loves you, she has something stranger in her bed
Fear has embedded where trust did once reside, as you keep it daily fed
Now you find the relationship, has died of all love that's finally bled

I've known the sincerity of a loving mothers kiss, who I so dearly miss
She had a way of knowing, when I had doubts, or thoughts of some remiss
Her love and understanding, would have sorted a reason for all of this
Somewhere somehow the strength of my psyche, has gone so terribly amiss

So here I stand a bitter, and frustrated shell of a once proud man
Who wore the Australian uniform with much pride, and sturdy hands
Trying to see as much of this unique, and most ancient dry old land
As I bequeath my soul and body, to this slowly drifting colored sand

A nice version Howard. But as I've said before, not as good as the Australian who wrote it, one Eric Bogle.
