His Feet Are Decked In Flowers

A sentinel stands silent, in parks across the land Stature proud, and hat turned up, a rifle in his hands He looks into eternity as those that died cannot The trusty rifle grasped so tight has never fired a shot
His steady gaze is focused, across those country lawns He thinks of long lost comrades, on frosty Autumn morns Of those who died in conflicts, and never more will rise Cast in bronze, there never falls, a teardrop from his eyes
As we pass, his presence there invites us all to pause Remember those who fought and fell, so bravely for the cause He represents the braw young folk, who died to keep us free They went to war in distant lands, protecting you and me
And once a year, on Anzac Day, his feet are decked in flowers He does'nt smile, nor does he cry, just passes lonely hours It's just as well his heart is bronze, for surely it would break If it absorbed the grief shed there, his tears would fill a lake
For years and years he stands and stares, he gazes over the grass And wonders if we'll ever learn, if peace will come to pass We'll all be gone, but he'll stand on, amid windy rain and weather Reminding us to pay respect to those asleep forever.
Lest We Forget.
