What's really puzzling is that Victoria and SA have well organised coursing supported by the state authorities while other states treat the sport very casually, if at all, with no official support.

Straight track racing has also been dumped in NSW - by GBOTA, the former NCA and GRNSW - despite its long established popularity.

As an aside, I also recall that some clubs used to sponsor/allow whippet races during normal greyhound meetings. Have not heard of them recently, and the odd Jack Russell event hardly fills the bill.

If there is one thing the industry needs it is more broadly-based community support. The potential is obvious. And one stream will bleed off the others.

Michael, The staff and volunteers do a Terrific Job all credit to the Owners and Trainers who also put in the hard Yards to make it a great success, Yes would you believe it Improves your dog when you go back to the circle we will defiantly watch Daves Entity when he goes around again and the Circle Track .

As Michael said it is a nice social Day out, a bit like a day out at the Polo at Portsea.

Results for Longwood. 03/06/2017

EXTERNAL LINK
Thank you GRV .

Terrific Performance by Why not Grace and Why not Peter .
Both going very well .

A very interesting day at coursing today. Longwood Coursing Club hosted the Noel Ryan Memorial Werribee Cup meeting with support events incl., NJ Smith Memorial, Slips to Boxes events +++.It was a perfect day all round, a crisp fresh morning with the sun shining through all day as the Greyhounds performed at their best with smart times recorded.

Congratulations to the winners and runners-up dogs and especially to the Cup Winner CULLQUIN BOMBER trained by Richard Anchen (Nagambie) and Runner-Up NIGHT ATTACK trained at Langwarrin by Leigh Howard.

The Winners and Runner-Ups of the 4 Slips to Boxes events will go on to compete at Shepparton on Thursday June 14. We wish them the best of luck.

It was pleasing to see new trainers to coursing winning events and with dogs that had never coursed before. The new timer was an added bonus which kept everyone abreast of the times the dogs were running and some were very SLICK!

On behalf of Werribee Coursing Club I would like to thank Gary Robinson and his willing team of workers at Longwood - Julie Stefanos (Sec.), chef extraordinaire Mrs Jean Hamilton (OAM), Neil Mason, the Wetzels, J Donaldson, G Howard, R Groom, S Doust and race caller Noel Massina and if I have missed someone please accept our thanks.

Perhaps we shall see you at Lang Lang on Sunday June 17 for Week 1 of the Sylvester Doyle Puppy Championships.

Coursing numbers continue to skyrocket with this Sundays meeting at Lang Lang attracting a 43 per cent increase in nominations on the corresponding meeting last year.

There is strong evidence that a growing number of Victorian trainers are realising the benefits of giving their younger greyhounds experience on the coursing circuit, where they can gain confidence from competing against just one other competitor.

The feature event is the Sylvester Doyle Puppy Championship, which has attracted young puppies from all areas of Victoria, said Sue Delaney, Secretary of the National Coursing Association of Victoria. Were also running the Gippsland Cup for Maiden greyhounds, which has attracted full fields.

In 2018, puppy coursing events such as the Sylvester Doyle are open to greyhounds born on or after 1 March, 2016.

Meanwhile, a number of coursings more seasoned coursers will also be in action on Sunday, with the Ray Boundy Memorial to also be conducted.

The Ray Boundy Memorial is packed full of successful coursing dogs coming from the past couple of seasons including Johnnie Red (Russell McRae), the Tally Ho dogs (Annette Kampman) and the ever-consistent Night Attack (Ian Rilen), who was runner-up to Better Than This in last years Waterloo Cup. Cullquin Bomber (Richard Anchen), Gotham Queen (Sean Lithgow), pictured in red collar, and Kid Ringo (Russell McRae) are others who should hold their own in this event, Delaney added.

The Sylvester Doyle Puppy Championship will be held over two days, with the concluding meeting to be held at Lang Lang on Sunday, 24 June.

A Big Thank you to GRV for their great update

The Massina family had their hands full on Sunday 22 July with four greyhounds from the same litter engaged in the Victorian Derby and Oaks series at Longwood.

The May 16 Dyna Double One and Chelabella litter, who was bred by Robyn Massina, showcased sibling rivalry at its best in the Victorian Coursing Derby (for male greyhounds only) with Yakari and Dakora coursing off against each other in the final round. Yakari came out on top to claim the first prize of $3,765 plus $1,000 VicBred bonus.

Yakari is no stranger to success on the coursing circuit, having won two out of three coursing events (Victorian Derby and Victorian Puppy event). He is also well accomplished on the circle tracks, having won four consecutive races from five starts at Ballarat and Bendigo.

You can never judge how a greyhound will go coursing. They could be a well performing greyhound on the circle track but not handle the multiple runs on the same day or over the weekend, Yakaris trainer Dallas Massina said.

Also from the litter is Julana and Barinya, who had less luck in the Victorian Oaks (for female greyhounds only) with Barinya making it through to the final course only to be scratched due to injury, leaving Lady Christina (trained by Gerard Rigg) the 2018 Victorian Oaks winner.

A black female out of Hooksy and Lavana, this was Lady Christinas second attempt at coursing, having finished the runner-up in a maiden event at Benalla in April.

But the biggest thrill was for Lady Christinas owner, Ross McDonald who is in his early 80s.

McDonald has been involved in greyhound racing for the majority of his adult life as a trainer, owner and slipper in the Western District.

A stroke stopped him from training dogs but it didnt stop his love of greyhounds, keeping his interest in the dogs through ownership.

Lady Christina is the first dog who had won a major event for Ross, and being a former slipper in coursing, it was a very emotional win for him, Rigg said.

McDonald was at Longwood to collect Lady Christinas trophy.

Lady Christina was to be Ross last greyhound, but now he is working overtime to convince his wife Leonie to let him buy another pup.

More than $20,000 was distributed across Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 July at Longwood, including two other feature events the Longwood Cup and Bert Clark Memorial.

The Longwood Cup was won by Raloo Barbara, who is trained by Wade Green. Raloo Barbara defeated accomplished courser Cullquin Bomber to claim the first prize of $1,400.

The final feature event was the Bert Clarke Memorial and it was a battle between Bear Left and Mickey Rawson, with Bear Left for trainer Raymond Henness coming out on top.

Bear Left showed the benefit of his Longwood outing with a follow-up win at Shepparton on Thursday at the juicy odds of $9.70.

Thank you GRV for the great support and updates.
