Laughil Billy was an all round brilliant race dog. He had exceptional early pace, powerful backstraight speed and was a very strong stayer. He was an extremely consistent and hard chasing dog. Winner of races over 360, 525, 550 and 575 yards. Billy won the Con Kirby Memorial 550 stake at Limerick, going through the stake unbeaten. Billy then reached the semi-final of the Irish Derby, winning two rounds in the process and recording times of 29.65, 29.89, 29.79 and a superb 29.61 when winning his quarter final. He was desperately unlucky not to reach the final. After his outstanding performance in the derby, Billy was one of the ante post favourites to win the Irish St. Leger but he sustained a serious injury in the first round. This injury severely restricted the rest of Billy's racing career just as he was approaching his peak. In spite of the injury he finished third in the Cox Cup at Newbridge before having to be retired.
