I think maiden dogs should have 1 or 2 official trials before they race . To many dogs are having a look when another dog looms up on there outside due to not trialing with other dogs ,it is that hard to fined dogs to trial with on trial days .MARK WILCOX

Yeah no doubt, I think PT's should still exist just without time cutoffs. Not all dogs are rockets but as long as they don't pull up or fight they should be passed to race

But I do believe bring in hair/blood testing and the number of dogs turning their heads will reduce dramatically in all grades

I totally agree with you Mark

I am seeing it too often

Instead of PT's before the first race, perhaps our authorities should look at how the horses do it and have official barrier trials on a set day on a rotational basis on non-race days in each region for Qualifying Maiden Trials, Clearance and Stewards trials

Have them on a separate on-line program so that participants can nominate for them and plan for them

It would IMHO increase the professionalism of the sport

Agree, it's almost impossible to get a half/field or even another maiden dog to trial with on trial nights.

The Clubs don't mind as they now charge you a "Solo" trial fee!
10-15 years ago there would be 1/2 dozen maiden field trials, at both Lismore & Casino.
Nowra would have qualifying trials on Monday night? once a month for maidens & 5th grade races. ( A very good initiative by the Club)

Clubs need to liaise with their participants to at least try and organise maiden field trials. Advertise that maidens field trials, 1st up on a regular basis, ie: every 2nd Wednesday. (Try something at least). It is becoming a BIG problem

Dogs getting no reward is no help, as the dogs know they are not going to get anything. That's why the dogs in NZ seem to race a lot more genuinely, as they get a reward at the end of the race.

Russ,

I can't argue with some of your descriptors but I must say that "UTS students" is way out of line. They are highly qualified people - quite a lot of their stuff is in worldwide publications and is peer reviewed - but unfortunately not in greyhound practice.

Todays problems are multifold .......

1. We don't know who said or did what as GRNSW releases are waffly and anonymous.
2. Many items in UTS reports tend to be recommendations for more work or experiments - they are not conclusions.
3. Matters put forward by UTS or any other group should be treated as ingredients for the cake and then assessed by people like GRNSW. It's the authority that is responsible for the end decision.
4. I may have missed something but I am not aware that UTS has been involved in "track surface" subjects. That's a whole different ball game and it is also one area where GRNSW does have some expertise (whether implemented or not).

You might also ask why it took some pressure from UTS for GRNSW to generate some action on the appalling lack of straight tracks in NSW. GBOTA might also be lax there.

However, I am mystified as to why PTs disappeared and there is an apparent lack of decent trialling facilities. That's unacceptable.

Mark 100% agree, hold trial days / nights, they wouldnt need to be televised just make it compulsory that young pups need 2-3 trials before nomming first. Trials should be a field of more than 3-4. Field trials these days are non- existent Ill take a trailer full of pups down to the track and no one will trial against you.

When field trialing over the 300 for maidens you have to get lucky not to find a dog that looks left or right . Or plays most of the way around .

Paul, Richmond is the only venue that I know of to offer field trials. However, Ive never been able to find another trainer that is willing to go in a field. Very frustrating when youre trying to educate young dogs.
