Hopefully the additional prizemoney goes to the Tier 3 and lower graded dogs and also to boost place prizemoney

I agree Sandro, even though there are more group races and aspirational prize money every year most of us would benefit with a significant distribution at the their 2 and tier 3 levels. Even the most successful kennels still play a significant role on the provincial track A quick count of the last 50 starts of many leading vic trainers shows approx 50% of starts are on provincial tracks

Hi Hayden

I hope the GRV are listening to your GOTBA

A strong grass roots base has always been the backbone of the sport and money is the muscle that keeps it strong

The new GRNSW and its Board since the ban was overturned have started to realize that 90% of dogs don't make it to the City grades therefore more money needs to be regionalized and spread across the lower grades to keep people in the sport, better track maintenance to keep dogs racing longer and less pressure on over-breeding and focus on re-homing

The sport has been around a long time, but it seems just the last few years its starting to evolve

I have long maintained that the measuring stick should be good, solid 5th Grade racing on provincial tracks. That also means good prize money even at the expense of the top bracket of feature races.

That said, lets look at the vital facts.

1. In general, there has never been over-breeding, In particular, there are past examples of quickie backyard breeding episodes and over-use of some dams. These have now been corrected.
2. Over the last two or so decades there has been a slight decline in breeding numbers followed by a catastrophic halving of those numbers following live baiting in 2015.
3. Such trends have caused the chronic shortage of nominations in recent times where fields of 3 to 7 are common ie under-breeding.
4. Scheduling of extra races (continuing to this day) have contributed to (3) above, possibly or probably due to authorities chasing more income regardless of other factors.
5. The huge and continuing trend to shorter trips is a function of trainer choice as well as the practice of authorities to pay money equivalent to longer races.
6. The practice of GRNSW/GBOTA to persevere with 280m racing at WPK exacerbated this trend and also robbed country clubs of many potential starters. Similarly, too, with the burst of the 3rd city meetings for a while. Even The Meadows sniffed at the shorts possibility for a while (remember the club was a promoter of horrible 311m races at its old track at Olympic Park).
7. The recent NSW move to boost money for 480m-plus trips was not accompanied by a reduction in money for short trips so, consequently, there has not been much change in the structure of racing only in who did better (presumably from higher income).
8. 15 years or so ago, GRV approved weekly provincial standard meetings at Sandown and Meadows which amounted to a spit in the eye to all the provincial clubs which lost many of their better quality starters. It also lost the Wangaratta track for a variety of reasons.

So, yes, it has evolved but in a haphazard, uncontrolled and unplanned way. Amazingly, cash is still flowing leading to people concluding that things must be fine. But are they?

Many serious customers have been lost forever.
Real staying dogs are rare.
The breed is suspect due to the heavy preference to good beginners, short trips and bend starts.
Regulations (and costs) are increasing and of debateable value.
My gold standard of good solid provincial 5th Grades is withering on the vine.
Authorities fail to properly investigate trends or, if they do, keep it all a secret.
In practical terms, authorities are responsible to nobody (see recent kerfuffle with VGOBTA).

Thank heavens we still have some top dogs and skilled trainers around. But the sport/business does not owe a living to anyone; they must earn it.
