I have a bitch that injured her toe.I got a Vet to stitch up her ligament. which held her toe together.I got her back fit ready to race, after her trail yesterday i found her toe popped out and hanging, put it back in and it would just keep popping out .i was wondering if taking the toe off would be a better option and does it affect her time, Front Off, Off toe

Craig, you can do a couple of things. Either get the toe off, or use a rubber restraint to keep the toe in line with the others when you run her. People often cut a strip from an inner tube of a bicycle tyre and use that.

Carole, the toes well and truly broken, after its removal your dog will be unable to walk and will need to be carried for about 4 days, it will be another 4 days after that before the pain wears off (most of the pain is caused by infection) her racing form will suffer by a 10 length loss. I am not a great believer in bandages being used at all, so after the 3rd day try wrapping her foot in one of the new boiological hand-wipes that cost pennies, and putting a childs sock over it to keep in in place, change it everyday. These bio-hand-wipes halve the recovery time. I recall dogs in the kennels I worked at were muzzled to stop them chewing the bandages off. We used to blame a stone on the grass-track/s for toes injuries, but it was probably the uneven surface and the bend-crowding stumbling. Sand surfaces reduced injuries a lot, but you then had the wet slush / sand-in-dogs eyes problems we saw in winter. During rainy weather when the dogs were leaving the track they were covered in mud and sand. Good luck.

I suppose its down to which bone in the toe is damaged. We had a dog that broke his P3 bone, it also dislocated at the joint. Specialist greyhound vet, Plunkett Deviln, didnt remove the toe, he filleted the broken bone out at the dislocation point along with the attached nail and left the pad intact. After the toe healed it just looked like the nail had been cut off - the dog never lost a yard of form when he came back.

Sorry Carole, I read it wrong, and assumed it was your dog.
