Just reflecting before in another thread on the past.
Just wondering if anyone knows how Tom Meulman is going?
He has been an incredible contributor to this sport and because I was reflecting on great vets, I couldn't help but think of Tom.
Don't have to tell me that he is officially not a vet, not talking about operations like vets have to do, just talking about general normal care.
(I took this dog to a vet and travelled to a region well away from mine rurally (i moved into a rural area also) and she told me that she was an expert with greyhounds - no idea about referred pain is all I can say, big waste of time and money).
Anyway, back to Tom, last time I visited him in Vic to look at a dog after a big space in between being there. The level of care and gentleness that he gave my dog each time was unbelievable. He would even proceed to massage the issue out with his newest device - just a human hand held massager (homedics brand) told me where to buy it from at the shopping centre- still got it.
Amazing advice and true experience.
Hope you are well Tom, I know that you were not the best possibly over 7 years ago. So I just wanted to send a shout out and say "hello".
p.s. you may not remember me but it doesn't matter, just now and again, I do wonder how you are.
n.b. getting that flat screen on your wall was cool.
p.s. we still have that funny little creature that you made, well my daughter has anyway = that's cool too.

Hi Jeanette

Tom is travelling around Australia with his wife in a camper van

He has been away at least a year.

He is on Facebook if you care to look him up and you will be able to contact him and see what he is up to.

He is also a member of The Grey Nomads forum too, he posted a couple of times early in the piece some months ago but hasnt posted since.

Like me, it appears that he gave up the greyhounds to enjoy his life travelling, and mostly in a caravan on the roads of Australia, which is great.

I agree. With you Jeanette, he is a great bloke.

I am so happy to hear that Tom is out there doing what he has probably wanted to do for a long time.
He is free and making the most of life.
I can just picture him and his wife, in their element - meeting interesting characters along the way and of course them themselves bringing their amazing experiences with them.
Happy travels to you too Ray.
There are many great people in the industry, and they leave their positive marks along the way with their selfless styles.
In turn they keep us going because of their skills, ever growing experience and kindness. So it keeps us in the game because of the positive memories.
I haven't met you but I am sure that you must be a top bloke too!
p.s. I got a private message from Doug, I don't know him personally either but here's a good opportunity to say thank-you for the external link to Tom's facebook page ( i never took it any further with the link, as I am truly just happy to know and settle with,
that Tom is out there in style.

Thanks for the compliment Jeanette but I am just a grain of sand on the beach in comparison to Tom.

I sent Tom a reply to one of his questions about caravanning on the Grey Nomads Forum and asked him if he was still involved in the greyhounds but he avoided the question which probably means that he didnt want to bring that aspect of his life into the life of strangers and caravanners. I can understand that too as I never mention it either unless I get to know them a bit better...a sad reflection of greyhound racing with the general public, isnt it!, particularly when a person is as fine, upstanding and honourable as Tom is.

Talking with and to greyhound people is a lot different to the general public I am afraid.

I havent seen a post from Tom on the Grey Nomads forum for over 6 months.

I suppose it is a good idea to separate the two, so you feel like you are getting away from the intensity of working on greyhounds for so long - physically and mentally.
And I suppose when you hold so much information, knowledge and experience, and with the internet allowing us to speak to people all over the world and in a group manner too, maybe there will always be a connection.
I can understand, leaving the holidaying area, free of bringing greyhounds into it.
As for the general public, yeah there probably is still a stigma

(then again it has brought it in to the open and let's face it for a long time people have looked down on the dogs,
so it's out there now - can't get any worse, what more can be said - some people are taking the reigns now and that's all there is to it.
And I suppose Vic for a while now is trying to do get the positive messages out there and connect with the community more, like the pink foundation and involving also members of the community that have more challenges,
I think the greys go to jails and nursing homes for visits too, I know they use to)

there but on the other hand with all of the sh*t that has gone down, sometimes it justs makes you stand up stronger.
You know when I first started visiting the tracks again and moreso with the qualies, just the people out and about, buzzing around, good bar-b-q going - it was just a great reintroduction.

I suppose if you are going around this great country of ours, you probably have a great deal more to talk about other than dogs.
But I am sure if one passes you by - it will still catch your eye!
Especially if it is against the back ground of Ayers Rock!

p.s. my kids are hanging out to go on a holiday but it's just something that doesn't happen with dogs around.
I just tell them now to go and ask one of the 19 month olds if they can have one.
Or I have thought about racing in different states and go on holidays that way!

Hopefully he is just in an area where there is no internet!
Or maybe he knows enough now to navigate their travels without any more tips from the Grey Nomads forum.
All the best and keep on travelling!
