Does anyone use or have any opinions on the electrolyte replacement product Lectade?

It is a powder in two sachets that are mixed together in water.

It contains;

Sachet A

Glycine 1.55g
Citric acid 0.12g
Potassium Citrate 0.03g
Potassium dihydrogen phosphate 1.02g
Sodium chloride 2.15g

Sachet B

Glucose monohydrate 11.2g

Is sodium citrate bad for dogs?

I used it a few times and it seemed to work fine.

I was wondering was there anything in that wouldn't be good for a dog.

I heard something, I think it was sodium citrate is in some electrolyte replacement type products is supposed not to be good for dogs and was just checking this particular product to see if people thought it was ok.

Paul, I used to use Lectade or Vytrate in the powder form sachets. These sachets make up 2 litres of liquidand are the same product. I now use Vytrate in a concentrate form as my chosen electrolyte, as I need only mix up what I need at the required time. In the long run it is cheaper also.
Regards, John.

paul'
I use both lectade and vytrate in satchet form , I find its not a matter of electrolye replacing but rehydration is the most important part, So I get a 3 litre container and mix the contents in and give my dogs about 300ml every afternoon after there walk , straight out of the fridge, all my dogs have had this and all love it...

Ok thanks everyone.

Is it true that some other products contain sodium citrate and is not good for dogs?

Paul,
I believe that sodium cirate is a duretic that flushes the body excesivley, leaving the dog dehydrated for days.

Many dogs that have been on products with sodium citrate have cramps and struggle to run past 300/400m Even in small doses it's bad for the adrenals& the kidneys.tThere are heaps of posts on GD. The worst product on the market is not being used much these days. Far safer products are on the market that do not contain any sodium citrate.

Paul The main Mineral in Electrolyte Potassium Chloride appears to be missing
Potassium Citrate is a Diuretic.

Is potassium phosphate better than potassium chloride?

Potassium chloride is generally the preferred compound for repleting potassium (rather than potassium phosphate or potassium citrate) to avoid giving unnecessary phosphate or base to a patient.

Sodium Citrate in high doses is as a Diuretic for Horses i.e. Neutradex.
Neutradex is a product designed for Horses, for some reason Greyhound Trainers chose to use it years ago, Virbac then put a Greyhound version on Store shelves. That is where the problen started
Sodium Citrate in small amounts is not detrimental to Greyhounds.
It is found in Ice Cream, The after race treat for Winning Greyhounds.

Very good point Mal. That is why Hydrogen tablets are a good product. Peter yes some trainers do give their dogs a soft serve after a win. That's not the issue it's the trainer who was giving their dogs products with SC daily during hot weather, after a trial or a free gallop.
