David,
my girl had 10 a few months ago. We fed a few of them by hand as a supplementary. I just kept offering them the teat until they actively refused or fell asleep. The one bit of advice i would offer, is to get them on solids asap. I supplemented mine with solids(still let them feed off mum as well) at 2 weeks. I say solids...but really it is liquid, stuff like semolina, rice pudding and mashed up well soaked kibble.
Good luck, get ready to welcome a few new wrinkles around your eyes lol.

When Feeding Lactol what exactly do you mean. If you are using a feed bottle or a syringe be careful that you don't drown them, this can happen if you put the lactol straight down their throat, it is best if under a week old to try to get them to feed of their mother it is sometimes not always good to interfere with nature. Best of luck whatever you decide.

David, the best advise I can give you is, don't hand feed if they are strong enough to feed from mum. Providing she has enough milk. When you say a bit weak, do you mean they are just getting pushed off the teat? Not getting their fair share?

Every hour or two put all weak / smaller pups on mum & keep the stronger pups to the side.(where mum can see so you don't stress her) Let the weak one's suckle without the stronger one's pushing them off. You will be amazed how strong they can become over a couple of days. The back teats will generally have more milk. If you can build them up they will be fine after a few days. Nothing is better for them than her milk, when they are born it is very important.

However if they are too weak to suckle then you will have to suppliment. I havent heard of lactol puppy feed.

Good luck David, hope all the little one's get stronger for you.

Gotta agree that mums milk is the best. Put the weaker ones on the back teats under mothers hind legs like Sue has suggested. they have a puppy formula in australia called Biolac, I used this on my weak pups and I assume Lactol is a similar thing. You will have to buy bottles to feed them with, but only go to this step if your pups are not suckling. I am sure the Lactol will give you directions on the usage. It will take some work but just sit with the pups when they are feeding and keep pushing the weak pups to the hind legs. Make sure that mother is extremely well fed so that she is producing enough milk. Hopefully your pups make it to the 4th week where they can lap foods themselves and when they get to this stage it makes life a hell of a lot easier. My pups are 8 weeks old now and doing brilliant

Hi David,

I would imagine Lactol is much the same as WHELPI or CANALAC

I would mix 3 part water to 1 part of the powder, put a little tepid water onto the powder and whisk and then add rest of water and feed through special puppy bottles and teats.

And when the puppies are about nearly 2 weeks old you can just steep slices of white bread in it and they will get the hang of sucking the milk themselves it is great to help Mother out!

Best of luck

I wouldnt agree that mums milk is best. I had a litter of 8 last time and mum had no milk. The 4 bitches drank what bit she had and we hand reared the 4 dogs. Last time I weighed the biggest dog at 7 months he was 77lbs so no loss on hime.
Best litter we ever had out of Vintage Prince never drank from the mother. Had an 84 pound dog was an absolute speed machine. If they suck feed them as often as you can. I was lucky mine were born in Summer so both me and my sister were off school and work so were able to take it in turns. Feed them til theyr all asleep. If puppies are awake then theyr eitehr cold or hungry!

Good luck hope he comes good for you. At least he is getting a chance. Unfortunatly sometimes they won't all make it no matter what you do, it can be heart breaking.
Best wishes to you & the little one.

David another quick thought, in case its the first time you have done this. While away from mum you will have to stimulate his privates with a warm (slightly)moist cotton ball.Stimulating will get him to go to the toilet. Watch mum with the litter, you will see how she does it & how as she licks they go to the toilet. Otherwise he will get a pain in his belly, from not going.

It will also keep him clean, which is also good.

Larry, did she have a C section ? A lot of bitches won't feed their pups if they did have one.
Try smearing her discharge on the pups and over her mouth. Very often this helps as they associate the smell with themselves, and the penny often drops. Good luck.
