Steve,
It's not just NSW, it's a national problem. Note that Vic has just cut back weekly meetings by one - which reflects the overall shortage of dogs wanting to race.

Another impact is the number of races where betting options are sharply reduced due to fields of

Lets be more accurate, there is a shortage of younger dogs going over 500m

Yesterdays Sandown meeting with very good prizemoney on offer had an average of 6 runners per race

Go to your Provincial meetings for 350-450m racing and you will find full fields in all races and more than likely over subscribed

The same happens in NSW and other States

I can't really put my finger in it, but there just seems to be a lack of desire to push dogs to 500m and beyond where in the past there was no problem filling 500m fields for good prizemoney

Is it genetics at play or is there a lack of training facilities to assist trainers to get their dogs to 500m or is it a change of mindset that its easier to train for shorter course and get a quick return or are dogs pulling up and not chasing for the full distance due to a lack of stimulus

Or is it a combination of all 4, or is it something else?

I remember some people arguing that all distances should have equal prize money because it's the `dna' of the greyhound and it's not its fault. Same can be written for 500m, 600m and 700m greyhounds. They are and they aren't trained the same. They definitely don't race twice a week on a regular basis.

Perhaps, GRNSW should tweak the prize money a bit, by regularly paying a little extra for 500m, a little more for 600m and a little more again for 700m. I often see short distance dogs racing twice a week and often picking up prize money. So far, GRNSW has done a reasonable job catering for 500m / 600m dogs.

On that note of `dogs', we still don't have enough separate bitches and dogs races outside of the Group Races.

Programming greyhounds with a few wins IMO is unsatisfactory. See other comments for further details.

One has to view the number of greyhounds that are left out of the meeting to identify whether there is shortage of nominations in some areas, poor programming that leads to them staying at home or just too many to cater for everyone. Some areas have plenty of nominations, but that isn't an excuse for poor programming in other locations.

The simple answer is people want return on investment.
If you can race twice a week it's better than once. More return but were do you achieve that? Race below 350meters. Pity prize money levels are different in each state. NSW needs more money for bread and butter dogs. Maybe with what's in the wind it may happen.

Scrap Wentworth Park mid week and use that money to lift 500 meter racing on the Tab circuit .Why would you try to lift 600 racing and pay 5000 a win on the tab circuit if you have not looked after 500 first after all you would think you would have to be running 500 strong before 600 .Wentworth Park should only race on saturday for good money at the moment while the numbers for 500 are low, boost the Tab circuit first and then look to bring mid week back when 500s are strong again then try to boost 600 and so on.

It's a crying shame that no one from GWIC has asked Australia's premier Kennel why they send 99.99% of there racers interstate when they are bred in N.S.W. !!!

N.S.W. is going backwards !!!

Minimum and as an example and of course tweaked to suit distances. Scrap the MIddle Distance Series or make it Heat ($3,000) and Final ($5,000) series. One week 5th Grade n fortnight later FFA

Paul would be looking down shaking his head. He tried to get involved and change things for the better, but was stymied from the word go.

didn't there use to be heats over 500 and final over 600m races?
and series where they raced over 400, 500 and 600m in 3 separate races?
maybe they can do heats on tab tracks over 600m with finals at wenty over 700m too?

Versatility Stakes - Yes ! Been around and should be re-introduced.

500m x 2 / 600m x 1 and greyhounds gain points i.e. 8pts down to 1 point if the greyhound starts.

Same with 600m x 2 and 720m x 1 at the provincials and
272m / 314m x 2 and 400m x 1. The same points system.

Like I wrote before, programmers both at GRNSW and Race Clubs should be creative and sensible when they program race meetings. Low grade 5th Grade with limited wins, 4th/5th Grades and FFAs in consecutive months or whatever.

An extra grade for juvenile dogs wouldn't go astray either

Exactly. I dont know how long VIC has had Grade 6/7 (respectfully copied from SA I guess) but saw them today at The Meadows and I think its a must in NSW if they are to look after juvies / 1-3 win greyhounds. Being completely out-graded is one of the biggest problems. that has been around for way too long. Another participant posted about the issue in QLD.

Strongly agree that 6/7 grade is a must. Nov class which is similar is a good concept as well.
I think they should also go back to the 2 wins per track system, so hard for 4th grade dogs, they seem to always put you in a FFA race.
