Interested to hear peoples opinions on is it possible to get a dog to run further than it naturally can ?

Say you got a dog could be a world beater but it just cant run 520 strong most people will tell you the dog can race only so far and thats it !

I have in the past had a very handy fast dog that i sold due to it not quite nailing the 520 .

Be interested to hear if people have any proven methods they employ to get just that bit further ?

I know its possible to increase a humans endurance with special training/supplements why not a dog ?

I believe you can build up a dogs endurance. The blood is usually the biggest issue with getting the distance out of dogs. It needs to be spot on. I do think that true stayers are bred that way and they must possess a different ability than other hounds. But I do believe with different training techniques , such as swimming , that you can improve a dog ober longer distances. Cheers

There is plenty of money around now to be won for Dogs that can't run 500 !
N.Z. has massive prize money for short distance racers !

Yes David , I think it is very important to have the blood as close to optimum at all times for all racing. You may get away with it over 300 or possibly 400 but if theres issues with the blood then that is the limit. Its the same reason they only Buck bulls for eight seconds. And I aint talking about the guys on the fence at Wenty as they wouldnt last eight seconds. Anyway blood is very important for endurance. No amount of training will help if their bloods not right, in fact quite the opposite , as it could lead to acidosis or worse. Cheers

Darren McDonald said to me once ,if a dog hasnt run 500m before their 18 /20 month old they will struggle later on .Also as well as some of the above ,if dogs have adrenals damaged by some of the kidney drenchs they will struggle.if their bred from sprinting lines and have other issues they also will struggle. Some supplements will help, others like synthetic vitamins will not help either.Feeding is important ,& how you feed, like wrong balance of protein & carbs. The additional % of fat fed to a stayer should be around 12% half that for sprinters That is if your feeding beef ,if your feeding roo or horse you will need increase a touch more. Many trainers do not understand the need that a good blend of calcium plays in keeping a dogs PH correct and the way oxygen is absorbed into muscles .Do not waste your time and your dogs needs with the cheap rubbish calcium from China which has a high phosphorus content.A racing greyhound should have at least 1 full teaspoon per day.Yes there are other good products like colostrum that we use in our calcium plus,as well as chia seeds. Hope this may assist you to find a length or two.
