Diana,
The only day I don't use a walking machine is the day AFTER a race, or if they are racing during the day well I don't put them on that morning.
I try and keep the same routine, that way my dogs rest all day and don't think anything is out of the ordinary during the day when they are racing at night.
Just what works around here, hope this helps
Nathan

HI DIANA,
Why would you not think of working a dog the DAY before?
they are a little different to humans in the way we would taper etc; before an event, but no reason why anyone would do this....in fact, if the work hasnt been done to fit before the day before, no amount of EXTRA work is going to be beneficial.

as nathan said, the day after is fine to rest them up....we let them have the whole day to recover, with a small empty/stretch walk in the fields just to loosen them a little.

good luck diana

To be honest I think it would depend on the dog as an individual. Some dogs thrive on lots of work up until the morning of the race, whereas others prefer to be left along in the final run up to the race. Worth giving it a go & seeing what you think - could be a case of trial & error...

Having said that - one of my trainers kennelhands is adamant that you cant wear a dog out by a short brisk walk, and believes it a falacy...

I remember I had to let a dog I owned off the lead for a quick run on the morning of his race, or he would be too wound up on the night, worked like a charm every time. Livi is right, they are all so very different.

Hi Dianna,

I believe Jason Thompson puts every dog in work on the walking machine for 14 minutes every morning then they go into a run paired up to do what they please, some run, some don't. They all get their biscuit in the morning, the whole theory is not to alert the dogs racing on the night as they get stirred up enough when they get in the trailer. The day after a hard run they might get a rest.

He gets the results.

My theory would be that if the dog is struggling on the belt, then it's too fast. A good crisp walking pace as you would do if you were on the road. You would be able to judge by the dogs action. then turn the speed up or down to suit. 80lb dogs would take to a faster belt than a 55lb bitch for obvious reasons

Ps day before is no problem and don't put on the day after a race. 20 mins is plenty enough a day.
