Would like some advice regarding the best practice for treating a front right monkey muscle tear.

Injury is a week old and had it injected by Vet after 4 days and have been massaging it and putting an ice pack on it a the last number of days.

I've been told that rest and patience is what is needed which is fine. I've dog only kennelled at nite and left out during day.

I've done no walking since with her and is this right ? Should i not walk her and if so for how long ?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Regards,
Sean.

Thanks Andy,

Had seen that thread when I searched. I have her in the therapy box once a day but did not see in that thread whether you should rest them from walking as well ?

Regards,
Sean.

Hi Sean ,

Normaly the dog will hurt the monkey muscle because of bad training practices or a long run !

Your dog will hurt his Monkey Muscle when he will stop turn 180 degree and go again ! or when he try to catch the drag lure and need to turn 180 degree to come back on it !

Cheers ! Paul

Paul,

I take it you are not meaning to offend so none taken as I would not consider myself to be best trainer in the world but certainly would not consider myself to have "bad training practices" either.

I believe she actually injured herself leaving traps and completely missed break, went down on her nose with both front legs spread.

My question is whether or not you should walk a dog or not having incurred this injury and if not how long to leave them off?

Regards,
Sean.

Thanks Robert.

Paul,

You will see her from her last race what I mean CLICK HERE I am not sure what you mean by "train" - Did you mean turn in traps?

My apologies maybe I should have stated "Monkey Muscle - Best Practice how to Treat?" but thought it would have been clear from my post that I was looking for a cure/treatment!

Regards,
Sean.

Sean,

I wouldn't sweat Paul... he's on several other boards and is an opinionated ass on those as well.

re: your girl's injury... time heals all wounds. We're very careful whenever we have any kind of muscle injury and give the dog as much time as needed to make a full recovery. When we feel the dog is ready, we work them back very slowly... walking, work in the sprint path and then finally schooling.

Patience, my friend...

Sean,

had the same problem a while back, used ice, massage, machine it 3 days on 3 days off and plenty rest but leave out in small pen/area where she can do some walking. took 6/7 weeks and bring her back slowly

Dear Sean ,

You dont need to apologies to me , Trainning for me is what you do to get your dog fit to race , can be walking , free gallop , drag lure or trials , hadslip or from the box !

I see the pic of your dog and i was sure about the fact shes very strong on the shoulders ! Somme times big muscles need to be warm up before stong gallop , what i like to do is to rub the day before trials or race .

I have good succes with a TENS machine , very cheap and easy to used .

I see your dog look to have better result with 20 days between races .

Why you cant keep this all the time ?

Many dogs will take 3 days to recover and walking and a straight 150 m can be enoughf to keep him fit , but because your dog have a shoulder let him catch the lure in front of you to reduce the chance to turn 180 degree .

Its alwais a question of train , rest and recovery !

Cheers ! Paul
